Update: Time to go for a dip. Fitbit has announced the sequel to the Flex, which brings with it an overhauled design and some features that swimmers are going to love.
The Fitbit Flex was introduced in the earlier days of the wearable scene. Some things have changed, but the need for a fitness tracker hasn't. Thankfully, the recently announced Flex 2 hasn't lost sight of that.
It's still sits at low-end of Fitbit's offering based on its simplistic offering. But unlike last time, the Flex 2 can do more than you might assume.
First off, it's swimmer-friendly. Not just because of its waterproof design, but Fitbit has also included support for swimming activities.
Next up, the app is robust as ever, meaning that even though it's a tracker designed to be simple, its functionality is anything but.
Here's everything we know about the second version of the Fitbit Flex.
Cut to the chase
- What is it? An update to the cheapest fitness tracker from Fitbit
- When is it out? Pre-sale begins today, globally available starting September
- What will it cost? $99 (about £79, AU$129)
Fitbit Flex 2 release date
We thought we were in for some IFA 2016 announcements from Fitbit, but the Fitbit Charge 2 and Fitbit Flex 2 squeaked through just before the event started.
Previous information pointed to the wearable being made available on November 27 of this year, but we've heard from Fitbit that it will be available in September for most, and October for some parts of the globe.
Fitbit Flex 2 design
The design of the Fitbit Flex 2 can essentially be summed up as the Fitbit Alta Lite. It looks just about the same, minus the snap-on straps and touch-sensitive screen.
Gone is Fitbit's older design ID, swapped out for this new one that we've now seen trickle down from the Fitbit Blaze, Fitbit Alta, and now the Fitbit Charge 2. It's more elegant, a trait that more people want in a fitness tracker
Like Fitbit's other trackers, this one will likely have a proprietary charging port. It's also probable that it will use the same clipping mechanism found in the Alta, which debuted earlier this year.
Fitbit Flex 2 features
The Fitbit Flex 2 will feature all-day activity tracking, and sleep analysis by way of the companion app's new sleep schedule functionality.
What you won't see here are mobile payments. Fitbit purchased a company called Coin, which would suggest the company was planning to bring in contactless tech to its future devices, but it appears we'll have to wait a little longer.
If you're holding out for a heart rate monitor or GPS support in the Flex 2, you won't find that here, either. The Fitbit Charge 2 can satisfy your thirst for thumper metrics, and the Fitbit Surge houses a GPS sensor. But the Flex 2 keeps it super simple, and goes for a smaller price as a result.
Fitbit Flex 2 competition
There's a lot of competition in the fitness tracker market with a number of companies joining in on where Fitbit made its name. Be sure to check out our best fitness trackers of 2016 list.
Then there's all the devices from Fitbit as well. Your choices are Fitbit Alta, Fitbit Blaze, Fitbit Surge, Fitbit Flex, Fitbit One and Fitbit Zip. Then there's the potential for a Fitbit Charge 2 as well, so it can be a difficult decision to make.
- These are the best Fitbit devices you can buy right now
Fitbit Flex 2 price
The Fitbit Flex 2 is now the cheapest Fitbit tracker you can put on your wrist.
The older version currently goes for $99.95 (£79.99, AU$129.95) but you can find it for a little cheaper if you're prepared to shop around. If you're on the edge of buying a fitness tracker, we suggest holding off until this one arrives on shelves. Stay tuned for a full review.
